The ATHENA network has been coordinated by a scientific coordinator, assisted by a management team. Together they were forming the Central Coordination and they were located at Utrecht University.
The responsibility to monitor the progress and functioning of the project was lying with the ATHENA taksforce. The Taskforce was meeting twice a year.
The ATHENA network was divided in 13 working groups. Each working group had one or more coordinators.

Scientific coordination
The scientific coordinator was Prof. Berteke Waaldijk. Berteke Waaldijk is a historian. Her research centers around comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives on (post)colonial and social definitions of citizenship and national identity. Berteke Waaldijk chairs the undergraduate liberal arts programme ‘Language and Culture Studies’ of the Faculty of Arts of Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Berteke Waaldijk was assisted by the EU Liaison Office, coordinated by Marlise Mensink unitl July 2009. The project manager responsible for ATHENA was Mischa Peters until the end of the ATHENA3 project with the assistance of Else van der Tuin. Edyta Just took the lead of the project during the summer of 2009, when Mischa Peters became the Head of the EU Liaison Office.
