The aim of this working group is to investigate the implications of research in the field of emancipatory theory and practice in the study (in both senses of the word) of visual culture. We will look at the staple inventory of visual culture studies: The WG will develop modules and teaching material that include and reflect the interdisciplinary and innovative character of this field. It will address

  • the society of the spectacle;
  • the politics of representation;
  • the conceptualization of gaze
with an intention to create visual culture literacy that will take into account the intersections of gender, race/class, nationality, sexuality, religion, etc. The new approach to liberatory education will take into account how such pedagogy will be taught and learned. Our aim will be to, simultaneously, create emancipatory knowledge and empower the student. Synergies with a European project on “Europe in Cinema, Cinema in Europe” will be sought and both working groups will meet to discuss the organizational matters at the international conference “Gender and Citizenship in a Multicultural Context” in Lodz.

The work of this group is located in Output Area I: Curriculum development: forging links between education and research in a European dimension and Output Area III: Strengthening cooperation between academic and social and/or civil organizations addressing women or gender differences.
