The principal aim of the third cycle of Thematic Network ATHENA is to guarantee that the expertise in the field of gender, culture and European diversity, and the expertise in the field of women, access and European citizenship will be integrated and consolidated in sustainable structures in three output areas: (1) curriculum development, in (2) research on education and in (3) the collaboration between universities and civil society. All activities in the Thematic Network of ATHENA III is to provide a framework for structured cooperation within the fast-growing, inter-disciplinary and socially relevant field of gender education in Europe and to create synergy between the different stakeholders in the field of knowledge about Gender in Europe: such as educational institutions, research networks, NGO’s in the field of women and gender, and policymakers. The aim is to promote the growth and the European dimension in the field and to ensure a balanced regional representation of European partners. In this way it will contribute to European Higher Education Area through institutional, international, and interdisciplinary European perspectives on knowledge about gender. In order to reach the aims the project has chosen to focus on two themes:
The themes underlie and connect all activities. The TN has a clearly defined structure that will work towards the realization of three objectives: Objective 1: Curriculum development: forging links between education and research with a European dimension This part of the network will focus on curriculum development, strengthening the link between education and research. In this objective the network will implement the methodology and principles, developed by the Tuning project, for setting-up a programme. Perspective outputs are: the development of joint modules; joint teaching material; joint European Training at PhD Level, a core curriculum available for students from all over the world; joint European MA degrees, tuned to bachelor education in women’s studies available at partner universities and via networks LLL, continued education. There will be synergy with doctoral training networks (esp. Marie Curie EST and RTN) Objective 2: Research on education. Developing tools for quality assessment, curriculum development and of ICT use This objective focuses on research on women’s studies education: the development and introduction of instruments and tools for quality assessment and evaluation of teaching, learning and research in the field of women’s studies, using the Tuning tools, the expertise of student participation in evaluation and educational improvement, and the expertise on gender and ICT as it has been developed by ATHENA & ATHENA2. The instruments will be available for programmes that integrate knowledge about gender. Objective 3: Strengthening cooperation between academic and social and/or civil organizations addressing women, gender and diversity Here the focus will be on strengthening the link between women’s and gender studies inside academia and public and private stakeholders in the field of gender equality and women’s studies. This will be done through the consolidation of networks that address issues of gender and culture and citizenship and access; the formation of a professional association that unites experts, networks, journals, institutions and experts in the filed of women’s studies; the consolidation of projects and cooperation of LLL in the fields of expertise; and finally web-based information as a clearing house of information that will facilitate cooperation between academic experts and non-academic organisations |
